Research of vascular access device-related complications in oncology
Abstract:
Background: Vascular access devices (VADs) are essential for delivering systemic anticancer therapies, yet device-related complications remain a major challenge in oncology care.
Objectives: To analyze global research trends and the knowledge structure of vascular access-related complications in oncology using bibliometric methods.
Research design: Bibliometric analysis.
Subjects: A total of 3072 articles and reviews published between 1977 and 2026 and indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection.
Measures: Bibliometric analyses were performed using Biblioshiny and VOSviewer to evaluate publication trends, journal productivity, authorship, citation structure, collaboration networks, and thematic development.
Results: Publication output increased markedly after 2020. The Journal of Vascular Access (n = 79) and Supportive Care in Cancer (n = 67) were the most productive journals. Raad I (n = 29), Hachem R (n = 23), and Jiang Y (n = 20) were the leading authors. The literature primarily focused on complication prevention, thrombosis, and catheter-related infections.
Conclusions: Research on vascular access-related complications in oncology has expanded substantially, while patient-centered topics and standardized vascular access management remain underrepresented. These findings provide a comprehensive overview of the field and may help guide future research priorities.
